A single power surge can wipe out the electronics and appliances you rely on every day — HVAC boards, refrigerators, computers, TVs, EV chargers, and smart-home equipment. SparkWise Electric installs whole-house surge protection at your main electrical panel so a spike from the utility grid, a nearby lightning strike, or a large motor cycling on has somewhere to go before it reaches your devices. We’re licensed and insured, and every installation is done to code and inspected where required.

What whole-house surge protection actually does

Whole-house surge protection uses a surge protective device (SPD) wired at or ahead of your main panel. When voltage rises above a safe threshold, the SPD diverts the excess energy to ground in a fraction of a second, clamping the spike before it spreads through your branch circuits. It’s the first and largest layer of defense — far more capable than a plug-in power strip, which only protects whatever is plugged into it.

Most homes benefit from a layered approach: a panel-mounted SPD for the whole house, plus point-of-use protectors on sensitive electronics like home offices and entertainment systems.

Why Northern Virginia homes need it

Surge protection is increasingly required by code

Current editions of the National Electrical Code (NEC 2020 and later, via NEC 230.67) require surge protection on the services of dwelling units when the service equipment is newly installed or replaced. In practice, that means if we upgrade or replace your panel, a surge protective device is typically part of bringing it up to current code. Adoption and enforcement vary by jurisdiction and your Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), so we confirm the exact requirement for your county or city before the work — and we pull the permit and schedule inspection where one is required.

What’s involved in an installation

A whole-house SPD installs at your main panel and is sized to your service. A typical visit includes confirming panel condition and available space, selecting the right device type (Type 1 ahead of the main, or Type 2 at the panel), installing and properly bonding and grounding it, and verifying operation. Most installations are completed in a single visit. If your panel is full or aging, we’ll talk through whether a panel upgrade makes sense at the same time — it’s often the most cost-effective moment to add surge protection.

Pairs well with

Whole-house surge protection works hand in hand with panel upgrades and panel replacement (the natural time to add an SPD), EV charger installation, a generator transfer switch, and an electrical safety inspection to confirm your panel is surge-ready.

Frequently asked questions

Does a whole-house surge protector replace power strips?
No — think of them as layers. The panel-mounted SPD handles large surges entering the home; point-of-use protectors add a second layer for sensitive electronics. Using both is best practice.

Will it stop a direct lightning strike?
No SPD can guarantee protection against a direct strike, which involves enormous energy. Whole-house protection dramatically reduces the far more common damage from nearby strikes, grid switching, and internal surges.

Do I need a permit?
Often yes — and we handle it. Requirements vary by jurisdiction; we confirm with your AHJ and pull the permit and schedule inspection where required. We never skip permits or inspections.

How long do SPDs last?
They wear over time and after absorbing large surges. Many units have an indicator light; we’ll show you how to check it and recommend replacement when needed.
