When the power goes out, a generator is only as good as the transfer switch connecting it to your home. SparkWise Electric installs manual and automatic transfer switches for standby and portable generators throughout Northern Virginia — so your critical circuits stay powered safely, without backfeeding the grid.
We install Reliance Controls PRO/TRAN transfer switches and other top-rated brands, sized to your generator and your home’s critical loads.

What Is a Transfer Switch?
A transfer switch is a safety device that connects your generator to your home’s electrical panel and physically disconnects you from the utility grid at the same time. This prevents backfeed — which is dangerous to utility workers and can damage your generator. In Virginia, a transfer switch is required by code any time a generator is connected to a home’s wiring.
Types of Transfer Switches We Install
- Manual transfer switch (load center style) — the most common type for portable generators; installed next to your main panel with 6–10 pre-selected circuits. You flip the switches manually when the generator starts. Brands include Reliance Controls PRO/TRAN 2, Kohler, and Generac.
- Automatic transfer switch (ATS) — detects a power outage and starts your standby generator automatically, then transfers power without you lifting a finger. Required for whole-home standby generators (Generac, Kohler, Briggs & Stratton).
- Interlock kit — a code-compliant alternative for whole-panel coverage with a portable generator; uses a mechanical slide to prevent the main breaker and generator breaker from being on at the same time.
What Circuits Can Be on the Transfer Switch?
With a manual load-center transfer switch (like the PRO/TRAN 2), you select which circuits to protect. Most homeowners choose:
- Furnace or air handler
- Refrigerator and freezer
- Sump pump
- Well pump
- Kitchen circuits
- Lighting circuits (bedroom, family room)
- Garage and sub-panel feeds
We’ll review your generator’s wattage capacity and help you choose the right circuits to stay within safe limits.

Why You Need a Licensed Electrician
Transfer switch installation requires work inside your main electrical panel — one of the most dangerous parts of any home electrical system. A permit is required in most Northern Virginia jurisdictions. Improper installation can cause backfeed onto the utility lines, create fire hazards, or void your homeowner’s insurance. SparkWise Electric is fully licensed and insured in Virginia and pulls every permit required.
Our Installation Process
- Site assessment — we evaluate your main panel, generator location, and load requirements
- Transfer switch sizing — we match the switch to your generator output and critical circuit count
- Permit application — we file with your local jurisdiction before work begins
- Installation — transfer switch mounted next to or near main panel, circuits re-routed, inlet box installed if needed
- Inspection and testing — we schedule and pass the final electrical inspection and test the transfer with your generator

Generator Inlet Box Installation
We also install exterior generator inlet boxes (power inlets) so you can plug your portable generator in from outside — no extension cords running through windows or doors. Inlet boxes are required when the generator is connected to a transfer switch and are available in 30A and 50A configurations to match your generator’s output.
Serving Northern Virginia Homeowners
We install transfer switches in Fairfax County, Prince William County, Loudoun County, Arlington, Alexandria, Stafford, and surrounding areas. Whether you already have a generator or you’re buying one, we’ll get the electrical side done right.
