No Spare Panel Capacity? You May Not Need a Service Upgrade
The most common reason an EV charger quote comes back higher than expected is panel capacity. If your service is already close to fully loaded, the default answer from most contractors is a service upgrade or heavy up — and sometimes that genuinely is the right call, especially if the panel is old or full.
But it is not the only option. On a recent Great Falls job we installed an EV load management controller instead: current transformers clamp onto the service conductors, the controller watches total household demand, and it reduces or pauses charging when the house approaches capacity. The car still charges overnight; the service never gets overloaded. The photos below show the controller and the CTs installed in the panel.
