Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs Replacement
Not sure if your panel needs attention? These are the most common warning signs our electricians see across Northern Virginia homes:
- Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok or Zinsco panels — these brands have well-documented histories of breaker failure and are a recognized fire risk.
- Breakers that trip frequently or will not stay reset — often a sign the panel cannot handle your home's load.
- Buzzing, crackling, or humming coming from the panel.
- Burn marks, scorching, or melted plastic on or around the panel.
- Rust, corrosion, or physical damage to the enclosure.
- Your home still has a fuse box instead of a breaker panel.
- Split-bus or Pushmatic panels from the 1960s–1980s.
- Insurance requiring replacement as a condition of coverage.
- A home inspection flagged the panel as unsafe or outdated.
- You are adding a major load (EV charger, hot tub, addition) and need more capacity.
If you notice any of these signs, do not wait — a failing panel is a safety hazard. Call (703) 915-5351 for a free assessment.
Dangerous Panel Brands We Replace
Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) — Stab-Lok: Installed in millions of homes from the 1950s–1980s. Independent testing found Stab-Lok breakers have a high failure rate during overload or short-circuit conditions, allowing dangerous currents to flow unchecked. Replacement is strongly recommended.
Zinsco / GTE-Sylvania: Known for breakers that fuse to the bus bar and fail to trip. Overheating and arcing are common failure modes, and parts are no longer manufactured.
Pushmatic: Push-button breakers that become unreliable with age and lack modern safety features.
What Is Involved in a Panel Replacement
- Free on-site assessment — we inspect your panel, evaluate your load, and recommend the right replacement size.
- Permit application — we pull all required permits from your local jurisdiction.
- Removal of the old panel — safely disconnected and removed.
- Installation of the new panel — typically a 200-amp residential panel; we transfer existing circuits and add capacity for the future.
- Labeling and circuit mapping — every breaker is clearly labeled.
- Code compliance and inspection — all work meets current NEC and local code, and we coordinate the final inspection.
Most panel replacements are completed in a single day (about 6–8 hours), with power off for roughly 4–6 hours.
How Much Does a Panel Replacement Cost?
Panel replacement costs in Northern Virginia typically fall into these ranges:
- Standard 200-amp swap (same location, same amperage): $2,500–$4,500
- Upgrade from 100-amp to 200-amp: $3,500–$6,000
- Heavy-up with meter base and service entrance: $5,000–$8,000+
Your actual cost depends on panel location, the condition of existing wiring, whether the meter base needs replacement, and local permit requirements. We provide free, no-obligation written estimates before any work begins. Ranges are general for Northern Virginia as of 2026.
Panel Replacement vs. Panel Upgrade — What Is the Difference?
- Panel replacement (swap): removing a defective or recalled panel and installing a new one at the same amperage — common for FPE, Zinsco, or physically damaged panels.
- Panel upgrade (heavy-up): increasing service capacity (for example 100A to 200A), often including a new meter base and service entrance cable.

Permits and Inspections
All panel replacements in Northern Virginia require a permit and inspection. SparkWise Electric handles the entire process — Fairfax, Arlington, Prince William, Loudoun, and Stafford counties, plus the cities of Alexandria and Manassas. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and make sure the work passes. Permit fees and requirements vary by jurisdiction; your AHJ has final say on code interpretation.
Panel Replacement FAQ
How do I know if I have an FPE or Zinsco panel?
Look for the brand name on the panel door or breakers. FPE panels often say Federal Pacific Electric or Stab-Lok; Zinsco panels say Zinsco or GTE-Sylvania. Send us a photo and we will identify it for free.
How long does a panel replacement take?
Most are completed in a single day, typically 6–8 hours, with power off for about 4–6 hours.
Will my insurance improve after replacing a recalled panel?
Many insurers offer better rates or reinstate coverage after a recalled panel is replaced. Check with your provider for specifics.
Can you add circuits during the replacement?
