Hardwired, Interconnected, and Battery-Backed
Most homes in this area are built with hardwired alarms that are interconnected — when one sounds, they all sound — with battery backup for outages. That interconnection matters: a basement fire should wake someone sleeping upstairs. We replace failed units, extend interconnected systems into additions and finished basements, and convert battery-only setups where the wiring can support it.

Detectors Expire — Most People Don’t Know
Smoke alarms have a service life, typically about ten years from the manufacture date printed on the back of the unit; CO alarms are usually shorter. After that the sensor degrades whether or not the test button still chirps. If you have never checked the dates on yours and you have been in the house a while, there is a good chance some are past due.
The other common surprise: a chirping alarm at 3am is often a low battery in an interconnected unit, which can be hard to trace to the right device. We sort that out in one visit.
Where They Go
Generally: inside every sleeping room, immediately outside each sleeping area, and on every level including basements. CO alarms go near sleeping areas and are especially important in homes with gas appliances, an attached garage, or a fireplace. Placement rules — distance from HVAC vents, ceiling fans, kitchens and bathrooms — affect false alarms as much as compliance, and we place accordingly.
