Who Should Get a Home Electrical Safety Inspection?

The electrical panel. The panel is the starting point of any inspection. The electrician will look at the panel’s age and brand, check for signs of overheating or corrosion, verify that breakers are properly labeled, confirm that the panel is appropriately sized for the home’s current load, and check for any signs of amateur or improper work. Some older panels have documented safety concerns that make replacement advisable regardless of apparent condition.

Wiring throughout the home. Where accessible — in attics, crawlspaces, basements, and garages — the electrician will inspect the condition of wiring. They’ll also identify whether your home has any aluminum branch circuit wiring, which requires specific attention.
Outlets and switches. The electrician will test a representative sample of outlets throughout the home for proper function, polarity, and grounding. They’ll check that GFCI protection is in place where required — bathrooms, kitchens, garages, exterior locations, and anywhere near water. They’ll look for cracked or discolored cover plates and test that outlets are securely mounted.

Exterior electrical. Outdoor outlets, service entrance wiring, and any exterior-mounted fixtures or panels will be checked for weatherproofing and condition.
Smoke and CO detector placement. While a full life safety review may be beyond the scope of a basic electrical inspection, a thorough electrician will note whether hardwired smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are present and functional where required.
What Happens After the Inspection?
You’ll receive a clear explanation of what was found. A good inspector distinguishes between:
- Safety hazards that need to be addressed promptly
- Code issues that may be recommended for correction
- Maintenance items that are worth monitoring over time
- Improvements that aren’t urgent but would improve your home’s electrical capacity or convenience
