Requirements come from the adopted building and fire codes — in Virginia, the Statewide Fire Prevention Code and USBC, which are based on the International Fire Code and reference NFPA 101, the Life Safety Code. In broad terms:
- Exits and exit access doors must be marked with illuminated signage
- Means-of-egress lighting must stay on for at least 90 minutes after normal power is lost
- Units are typically tested for 30 seconds monthly and for the full 90 minutes annually, with records kept
- Emergency lighting must be supplied from a source that stays energized — not a light switch

Testing, Batteries, and Annual Reports
Emergency lighting fails quietly. The head looks fine on the wall, and the battery is dead. Most of the failures we find are batteries at end of life, corroded contacts, or units installed years ago and never tested.
We can test existing units, replace failed batteries and heads, and replace fixtures that are past economical repair. Older fluorescent and incandescent units are usually worth swapping to LED — the load drops, the batteries last longer, and the units stop failing between inspections.
